Copper Mountain is 100% wind powered

When I was snowboarding last winter I saw this sign copper wind power shot. I thought that it was the most amazing thing ever. For a business that size to run totally off of wind power they must have a massive wind farm. If a business that uses so much energy can do it then it can't be that hard for other businesses to do it also. I am a big fan of putting money into renewable energy technology. It made me really proud to be skiing at Copper Mountain. I went there for the rest of the season. I have never seen anything like this at any of the other resorts. Plus, Copper is just a great mountain!!

Last night I was watching the news and they said something about Al Gore buying carbon credits to offset his pollution. I know these credits have not worked out so well as they were meant to. I think it was a great idea, and I hope that we continue trying to find ways to curb our environmental impact. These credits however, were and are a bad idea. They have become such a joke. They are so cheap now, that it is easier to buy them than for a company to try to emit less CO2.

Back to Copper... I remembered the sign I had seen last winter, and wondered what impact they were having. I wondered why I hadn't heard more about them setting an example. I went to their website for more information, and found that they are buying wind credits. They don't have a wind farm. They buy their power from the power grid like any one else. I feel deceived.

I like that they put money into wind power, and looking through their site they are very committed to environmental concerns. They have a great recycling program. You can tell by all of the recycling bins all over the mountain. I am still glad I ski there, and I will continue to support them due to their great environmental record (comparatively). I just wonder how they can put up these signs that are so deceitful.
